Poland: Waste in Landfills and Reduction Strategies

Poland: Waste in Landfills and Reduction Strategies

    Study visit in Kobierniki
The fourth ecological action carried out as a part of the local ecological activities in Poland was a study visit to Waste Management Company in Kobierniki. To visit the place we had to put on protective clothes.
The aim of our visit, which took place on 17th October 2024, was to see the amount of municipal waste that ends up in the landfill, to find out what happens to waste next and how to reduce the amount of waste produced.
Visiting the Waste Management Company we had the opportunity to follow the path of waste in all parts of the plant from its arrival through the sorting plant to its proper management. We saw the sorting plant, composting plant, fermentation plant, secondary raw material warehouses and the waste storage yard.
During the visit we could see from a short distance a Harris’s Hawk – a medium-large bird of prey which task is to deter other birds from scattering the waste.
Thanks to this visit we realised how important it is to manage resources sustainably, segregate and reuse them
